Julie Symmonds
Lead Dance Artist

Julie is a trained ballet and tap dance teacher with a degree in Dance (B Mus Hons University of
Cape Town, specialising in Dance for Parkinson’s).

Julie’s Dance for Parkinson’s journey began in 2015 when she heard about the Dance for PD ® programme in New York. Julie attended the Introductory training under the founding director, David Leventhal in New York that same year, making her the first South African to complete this training. The first Dance for Parkinon’s class took place in Somerset West, South Africa in February 2016.

In 2017, Julie returned to New York to attend the Advanced training courses and subsequently completed the rigorous Certification programme. This qualification ensured Julie was able to train teachers in SA, thus enabling the spread of this wonderful programme across SA and Zimbabwe.

In 2019, Julie and her family immigrated to Scotland.

Julie is currently the only Certified Dance for Parkinson’s teacher in the United Kingdom.

Julie is a freelance teaching artist in Dance Health, delivering classes at Scottish Ballet and MacRobert (Stirling University) as well as in her private capacity.
